Audio-Technica ATH-8 (Signet TK33)- Overview
Top of the line Audio-Technica electret model introduced in 1978. ATH-8 headphones won the MITI Good Design Award in the year they came out. According to many sourced The ATH-8 is visually identical, or slightly inferior, to the US-market Signet TK33. The system included adapter box and headphones with special connector. ATH-8 were bipolar back electrets with 2 micron mylar diaphragm.
General Description of the Sound
Audio-Technica ATH-8 (in my case Signet TK33) are not neutral sounding headphones. There is a slightly noticeable midrange hump and slightly rolled-off bass. The bass roll-off is especially noticeable if the pads are old and vinyl has peeled off. With new pads the sound if more balanced and with some bass boost TK33 sounds surprisingly good. Very fast and detailed, with nice accurate soundstage. I like TK33 more than any of entry level Stax electrets (SR-40, SR-30 and etc). TK33 does not sound on SR-Lambda level but not many headphones do. TK33's presentation is open and clear without grain or strain I heard in some vintage headphones. The comfort is also very good due to light frame and cups as well as strap/headband design. Overall TK33 are a great pair of vintage headphones that do more things right than wrong.
