Beyerdynamic DT-48 - Overview
The DT-48 was first developed as a product in 1937 by Beyerdynamic but did not achieve any real success until its relaunch some twenty years later during the mid to late 1950s. It is generally regarded as being the first production moving-coil stereo headphone. There have been multitudinous variations of the basic design over the sixty years since its initial success with various driver characteristics (impedance levels (vary from 5 to 600 Ohms, and revisions to the aesthetic of the construction of the body of the headphone.
Beyerdynamic continues to make the DT48 today and as such it is a consumer electronics product with a remarkably long production period.
Auditory Character
As befits its intended target market (Studio monitoring or aural-acoustical investigations), the DT-48 is designed to be analytical with a flat frequency response and the capacity for good detail retrival. While they perform well in this respect, there is criticism of a limited bass response and compression in the headstage. As such, the sound signature may make them an aquired taste for the purposes of hi-fi listening.
